ING Bank Romania has launched RoPay, a service that simplifies payments for business banking customers using Romania’s instant payment infrastructure.
ING’s real-time payments
RoPay service can be activated directly from ING’s online banking platform. No visit to a bank branch or documentation is required for its adoption, but there are a few conditions to be met in order to activate the service.
The clients must have at least one payment acceptance service provided by ING (POS, SoftPOS, or ecommerce) to use the RoPay features. Another requirement is that the request must be made by the applicant company’s legal representative.
The bank also announced that until 1 July 2027, its customers can benefit from a 0% fee for payments obtained from individual ING clients and a 0.25% fee for payments received from customers registered with other banks, as long as the transactions are made via an internet banking app and through RoPay.
How does RoPay work?
ING’s instant payment service adoption doesn’t only support merchants, but their customers too.
For entrepreneurs, RoPay simplifies the payment-delivery process and the transaction processing costs. As for the financial liquidity aspect of the discussion, it provides a fast payment system, in comparison to the traditional one, which can take up to several days to be completed.
Concerning these businesses’ customers, the ING RoPay adherence comes with slightly different advantages besides the speed of money transfer. At the time of a payment, customers no longer have to fill in their banking information. This way, the service provides a security layer to its features.
ING is not the first bank in Romania to launch RoPay. Other banks like BCR/George, UniCredit Bank or CEC Bank have already enrolled in this service program.
In 2025, TRANSFOND, the developer of RoPay, has joined EMPSA, Europe’s mobile payment systems association, and through their union, a significant step in enabling cross-border payments has been made across Europe.
