Payment technology provider Worldpay has announced its plans to support the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), an open standard for AI commerce.
The ACP allows AI agents, individuals, and businesses to collaborate to complete purchases. Through it, ChatGPT users in the US will be able to shop directly from participating Worldpay merchants, utilising Instant Checkout. Worldpay’s credential management and fraud prevention solutions allow merchants to accept transactions securely, in turn ensuring that consumers’ data is safeguarded similarly to how traditional ecommerce transactions are.
Facilitating AI commerce adoption
With Worldpay’s credential-management solution, merchants are set to be able to adopt AI commerce use cases more optimally with flexible, acquirer-agnostic token management, automatic credential updates to reduce failed transactions, and enterprise-grade security to protect sensitive information at every stage.
Additionally, considering the current financial environment, where merchants need to adapt to the evolving landscape of agentic commerce, decreasing complexity for consumers plays a key role. Through its merchant-centric approach, Worldpay intends to ensure that integration with emerging frameworks, including OpenAI ACP and Delegated Payment specifications, is as simple as possible so that individuals benefit from an improved checkout experience. By supporting optimal onboarding regardless of a merchant’s current payment processor, the company aims to minimise technical barriers, scale adoption, and enable merchants to achieve multi-agent interoperability across platforms. This approach focuses on supporting merchants in meeting consumer needs as agenda-led commerce advances in the marketplace.
Furthermore, besides Worldpay, PayPal also recently adopted ACP to broaden payments and commerce in ChatGPT, enabling users to check out instantly using its services. The partnership with OpenAI enabled PayPal to assist payment processing for merchants leveraging OpenAI Instant Checkout and also connect its global merchant network to the company. Through this, the two aimed to develop a platform for small businesses and brands to sell within ChatGPT.
