Klarna has revamped its membership programme, removing service fees and increasing cashback and perks across four subscription tiers.
The Sweden-based digital bank and payments provider has updated its membership structure, which now spans four tiers - Everywhere, Plus, Premium, and Max - each offering a different combination of fee-free payment access, cashback, and lifestyle perks. According to the company, the changes are designed so that a membership's perks offset its monthly cost.
The revised programme removes service fees for pay-later transactions across all tiers, with fee-free pay-later access also available without a membership at partner stores. Klarna Everywhere, priced at EUR 4.99 a month, provides fee-free use of Klarna wherever Visa is accepted, subject to credit approval, along with a physical credit card and monthly discounts.
Higher tiers add cashback on all Klarna payments, rising from 0.5% on Plus (EUR 9.99 a month) to 1% on Premium (EUR 19.99 a month) and 1.5% on Max (EUR 44.99 a month). Partner cashback multipliers in the Klarna app also increase by tier, reaching up to four times the standard in-app rate on Max. Klarna states that the combined value of subscriptions, cashback, and travel benefits on the Max tier can reach as much as EUR 6.000 a year.
Each tier above Everywhere includes a set of bundled digital subscriptions. Plus includes services such as ClassPass and Laundryheap, while Premium and Max expand this to as many as 23 subscriptions, including recently added services NordVPN, Livi, foodora, and Voi, alongside existing partners such as Headspace, The New York Times, and Condé Nast titles. Moreover, Premium and Max members also receive a metal payment card, extended purchase protection, and airport lounge access, with Max adding cancel-for-any-reason cover on trips and events and unlimited lounge access.
Loyalty integration and rollout
Members can convert Klarna cashback points into airline and hotel loyalty programmes, including British Airways Club, Flying Blue, Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles, and hotel schemes such as ALL Accor, IHG One Rewards, Hilton Honors, Radisson Rewards, Wyndham Rewards, and Global Hotel Alliance Discovery.
Klarna Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder Sebastian Siemiatkowski, said the changes aim to make membership perks accessible without requiring a long-term commitment, noting that members can move between tiers depending on their needs, without penalty.
The updated tiers are rolling out gradually over the coming weeks in Denmark, Germany, Austria, Italy, France, Spain, Belgium, the UK, Norway, Sweden, and Finland, with further markets to follow. At the same time, new members are being offered an introductory rate of €0.99 for the first month on Everywhere or Plus, or a 30% discount on the first three months of Premium or Max.
The revamp extends Klarna's positioning beyond pay-later credit into a broader membership and cashback model, placing it in closer competition with traditional credit card rewards programmes and other subscription-based financial services across the European markets where the new tiers are launching.
