UnionPay International (UPI) has announced that it has expanded its 10-year relationship with Worldpay, with the two now enabling UnionPay 3DS and ExpressPay solutions.
As part of this strategic initiative, UnionPay International and Worldpay aim to further boost the security of online payments while also enabling customers to benefit from an augmented experience when conducting transactions.
Scaling payment security while reducing friction
By featuring UnionPay 3DS, the extended partnership supports the increase in online acceptance for the UnionPay card at a global level, enabling cardholders to transact in the US, UK, and Europe, and across several sectors, such as airlines, retail, and hospitality, among others.
When it comes to Worldpay, adding ExpressPay is set to further optimise the online checkout experience for UnionPay cardholders, facilitating both simplified transactions and scaled security. This improvement is set to allow UnionPay to be gradually integrated as one of the global card networks among Worldpay’s payment portfolio for its clients.
Talking about the strategic move, Nabil Manji, Head of Fintech Growth and Financial Partnerships at Worldpay, mentioned that, since the start of their relationship back in 2015, the collaboration with UnionPay International has been focusing on a shared commitment to support a greater range of simplified and safe payment options.
Furthermore, as the two companies boost UnionPay acceptance, they aim to help businesses expand their operations by enabling shoppers to pay however best fits their needs. Through ExpressPay, UnionPay cardholders are set to be able to benefit from more efficient online transactions, which minimise checkout friction and increase merchant conversion rates.
Adding to this, Larry Wang, CEO of UnionPay International, stated that utilising Worldpay’s global reach and diverse merchant base, the company can facilitate more opportunities for UnionPay cardholders to pay the way they prefer.
The announcement comes shortly after UnionPay International, along with its partners, pilot launched cross-border QR payment linkage between China and Indonesia. During the sandbox phase, selected users from China’s mainland were able to make QR payments using the UnionPay app and Alipay app at several QRIS merchants in Indonesia. Conversely, pilot merchants in the UnionPay and Alipay networks within China were able to accept QR payments from 22 major Indonesian mobile payment apps.
