Accertify has achieved compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), extending its fraud prevention capabilities to healthcare organisations that process protected health information (PHI).
The fraud decisioning provider, whose Predictive Yes Platform is used by merchants to assess transaction risk, announced the compliance milestone as part of an effort to support healthcare and healthcare-adjacent businesses in addressing payment fraud, account takeover, and other forms of digital healthcare fraud. The certification allows the company to apply its fraud prevention tools to digital payment journeys that involve PHI, broadening the range of organisations it can serve to include Health Savings Account (HSA) issuers, pharmacies, insurers, and medical supply retailers.
Healthcare fraud and HSA market growth
Healthcare fraud costs the industry tens of billions of USD annually, according to the company, with losses increasingly extending beyond traditional claims fraud into digital payments, account access, and ecommerce channels. The shift reflects the broader digitisation of healthcare payments, as consumers increasingly pay for care, prescriptions, and other qualified medical expenses through digital and card-based methods.
The HSA market has expanded alongside this trend. Research from Devenir shows the market reached nearly 42 million accounts holding approximately USD 174 billion in assets by the end of 2025. As HSA cards become a more widely used payment method for healthcare purchases, they have also become a target for account takeover, stolen credentials, and other forms of payment fraud, according to the company.
Expanding fraud coverage under regulatory requirements
HIPAA sets US federal standards for protecting sensitive patient health information, and compliance is typically a prerequisite for vendors handling data on behalf of healthcare organisations. By meeting these requirements, Accertify can now offer enterprise-level fraud prevention to a wider set of healthcare-related businesses while adhering to the privacy and security obligations tied to PHI.
Andy Mortland, Vice President of Product and Development at Accertify, said healthcare organisations are digitising the way consumers pay for care, prescriptions, and other qualified expenses, and that as HSA adoption grows, fraud follows the same digital payment flows. The official added that fraud prevention in this sector needs to protect consumers without introducing friction at points in the payment journey that matter most to the customer experience.
Balancing fraud prevention and customer experience
For healthcare payment organisations, managing this balance between fraud prevention, data privacy, and customer experience is becoming an increasing operational priority as digital payment options expand across pharmacies, insurers, and other healthcare retailers. Accertify's Predictive Yes Platform is designed to help these organisations approve legitimate healthcare purchases while identifying fraud across the customer journey, an approach aimed at protecting consumers and supporting revenue growth without adding unnecessary transaction friction.
The HIPAA compliance milestone positions Accertify to compete for business among healthcare organisations that require fraud prevention vendors capable of handling regulated patient data, a segment that is expected to grow as digital payment adoption in healthcare continues.
