Rocket Money has launched Rowan, an AI agent built with Anthropic that manages personal finances via text messages.
According to the announcement, unlike conventional personal finance applications, which typically display spending data on a dashboard and leave decisions to the user, Rowan is designed to identify opportunities to save money and act on them directly, following instructions the consumer provides by text. The system operates continuously in the background, reviewing account activity and flagging relevant items as they arise.
When Rowan identifies a way to save, it sends the consumer a text message. The consumer can reply in plain language, and Rowan carries out the requested action. Furthermore, capabilities described by the company include renegotiating recurring bills, cancelling subscriptions, and setting up automated savings transfers.
One example given is a free trial for a streaming service that goes unused. Three weeks after sign-up, Rowan sends a message asking whether the consumer wants to keep the service or cancel before being charged. A one-word reply is sufficient for Rowan to contact the provider, cancel the trial, and confirm the outcome. In another example, a consumer can instruct Rowan by text to round up coffee purchases to the nearest dollar and transfer the difference into a high-yield savings account, after which the process runs automatically.
Built with Anthropic
Rowan is developed using Anthropic's AI models alongside Rocket Money's own data. According to the company, the system combines adaptable AI agents with fixed, rules-based code, and includes human oversight where required. When Rowan encounters an unfamiliar case, such as a subscription service with a non-standard cancellation process, the company says the system is designed to identify a resolution and apply it across its wider user base, rather than treating each instance in isolation.
In addition, it was also said that the architecture aims to move the product beyond a novelty and toward a tool that can help consumers manage their money, combining flexibility in some parts of the system with stricter controls in others, alongside ongoing human review.
Availability
Rowan is currently available to a limited group of Rocket Money subscribers as part of a new Premium Plus tier. The company has stated that broader availability is planned later in 2026, without specifying an exact date.
The launch reflects a wider shift among personal finance platforms from passive account aggregation toward agentic tools capable of executing tasks such as bill negotiation and subscription management without direct user intervention at each step. At the same time, it also illustrates how conversational interfaces, rather than dedicated apps, are increasingly being used as the primary channel for financial account management.
