Belize Bank Limited (BBL) has entered a six-year partnership with Backbase to implement an AI-native banking operating system across its retail and business banking operations, marking an important digital banking transformation in the country.
Scale of the partnership
BBL, described as Belize's oldest and largest financial institution, holds approximately 43% of total national banking assets and serves more than 100,000 retail and business banking clients. The bank reports more than USD 1 billion in total assets and operates the country's largest branch network. According to the companies, BBL required a platform capable of scaling with its market position while delivering consistent digital services across its customer base.
Planned capabilities
By deploying Backbase's Banking OS across retail and business banking, BBL intends to replace existing fragmented workflows with self-service functionality, accelerated digital onboarding, and unified cash-flow visibility for business clients. According to the companies, the platform is also intended to remove internal operational silos by giving bank teams a unified view of customer information, with the aim of reducing service resolution times.
The Banking OS is designed to operate alongside BBL's existing banking core rather than replacing it, using Backbase's Connectivity Layer, referred to as Grand Central, to integrate with existing banking systems and support the customer lifecycle. Several additional partners from Backbase's marketplace are also involved in the deployment, contributing to what the companies describe as a fully integrated digital banking system.
Company commentary
A company official at Backbase described Belize Bank as an institution aligned with Backbase's approach, citing the bank's market position and commitment to modernising its retail, SME, and digital lending operations. The official described the partnership as part of an effort to build financial infrastructure supporting the country's future economy.
A company official at Belize Bank Limited described the partnership as a step toward a new model of banking centred on personalisation and evolving customer needs, saying the collaboration is intended to combine Backbase's technology with the bank's customer-focused approach to change how customers in Belize experience banking services.
Broader implications
The partnership reflects a broader trend of regional and national banks in Latin America and the Caribbean pursuing large-scale digital transformation projects to modernise legacy banking infrastructure, particularly institutions holding a dominant share of their domestic banking market. As banks in smaller national markets pursue AI-enabled onboarding and lending capabilities, partnerships combining core banking continuity with modern digital layers may become a more common approach to modernisation across the region.
