The European Payments Initiative (EPI) has unveiled Wero’s new ecommerce solution, aimed at enabling online payments at merchants in Germany.
The company also announced the first merchants to accept Wero on their websites at this early stage, including Eventim, Decathlon, Lidl, Rossmann, CEWE, Cineplex, Zooplus, Dott, Hornbach, Air Europa, Veepee, and BAUR. Their customers can now complete transactions easily and conveniently directly through Wero’s user-friendly platform.
The deployment of Wero ecommerce
With Wero ecommerce, now deployed by Sparkassen and Volksbanken / Raiffeisenbanken in Germany, 46 million Europeans can now find merchants accepting this payment solution. In the upcoming weeks, additional EPI member banks will join, allowing Wero ecommerce transactions.
Designed as an alternative to international payment systems, Wero now offers Europeans a fast and secure mobile payment solution. The project is supported by 16 European banks and PSPs, aiming to expand with the integration if new bank members. EPI currently unifies more than 1,100 members, divided between banks, which act on the customers’ side, and acquirers acting for the merchants.
Acquirers and partners supporting Wero in Germany include Buckaroo, Deutsche Bank, Nexi, Nuvei, Payabl, PAYONE, Pay.NL, PPRO, Unzer, Société Générale, Stripe, VR Payment and Worldline, with others to be announced in the near future. Additionally, four new countries will also roll out Wero ecommerce in 2026: Belgium, France, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. The migration of Wero’s iDEAL solution will start next year.
Leveraging EPI’s fully API-based infrastructure, merchants can take advantage of a simplified onboarding process. Wero will allow retailers to connect with consumers in any participating market in Europe, while shoppers will have a convenient cross-border payment experience online and in-store, as well as for subscriptions and value-added services.
EPI expressed positive feelings regarding the initiative and the deployment of sovereign payment solutions. The demand it experienced demonstrates the need for a European alternative to international payment systems, as banks, merchants, and PSPs are working together to establish a collaborative solution. The rollout of Wero ecommerce marks a milestone for EPI, a shift towards a sovereign European payment system.
