The US Faster Payments Council (FPC) has released the 2025 edition of its State of Play in US Faster Payments report. The report outlines the current condition and progress of faster payments networks across the United States. The publication, prepared by the FPC Network Committee, is available through the organisation’s Faster Payments Knowledge Centre.
The report provides a detailed overview of ten payment networks operating in the country, examining their operational features, network structures, and technological frameworks. It includes profiles of both core clearing and settlement systems, as well as additional networks that build on existing payments infrastructure. Among those featured are Accel, FedNow Service, Juniper OnWe, Mastercard Send, Open Payment Network, RTP Network, SHAZAM, STAR, Visa Direct, and Zelle.
Analysing adoption and network design
The State of Play report focuses on how faster payments are currently applied across multiple sectors, including payroll, bill payments, disbursements, and peer-to-peer transactions. It also reviews system components such as settlement methods, message standards, routing procedures, and measures aimed at preventing fraud. By presenting these characteristics side by side, the report aims to assist financial institutions and payment providers in assessing available faster payment options.
Representatives from The Clearing House, who chair the FPC Network Committee, noted that bringing together a consolidated view of the various US networks can help the industry better understand how these systems complement one another and contribute to broader adoption.
FPC officials added that the faster payments environment in the United States is continuing to evolve as network capacity expands, new use cases appear, and participation grows among both consumers and businesses. The organisation intends to update the State of Play report periodically to reflect ongoing changes within the market and provide industry participants with up-to-date insights into the development of instant and immediate payments.
