Visas anti-child porn drive helps shut 750 websites

Tuesday 14 December 2004 11:42 CET | News

Leading credit card brand Visa International Monday announced that more than 750 websites carrying child pornography had been shut down since it started withdrawing payment facilities to them in February 2002.

Visa International has been actively searching the Internet for purveyors of child pornography around the world and working with its members to withdraw payment facilities for illicit merchants, the company said in a statement. Over 85 percent of child porn sites we have identified are no longer active or no longer accept Visa. The rest are in the process of being shut down, said Peter Maher, Visa Asia Pacifics general manager for risk management. He said: The child porn merchants identified so far have been located outside the Asia Pacific, especially in countries where laws prohibiting child porn are lax or non-existent.
