US Bancorp puts Visa Micro Tag payment device to a test

Wednesday 5 November 2008 14:10 CET | News

Visa and US Bancorp have launched a pilot programme which is able to test consumer preferences for an alternative electronic payment device called the Visa Micro Tag.

The device, which is payWave-enabled, attaches to a key ring and enables Micro Tag holders to wave and pay. Visa PayWave is a contactless technology feature which enables cardholders to wave their card in front of contactless payment terminals without the need to physically swipe or insert the card into a point-of-sale device.
The Visa Micro Tag can be used with credit, debit or prepaid accounts and incorporates a chip which allows consumers to pay by waving the US Bank Visa Micro Tag in front of a contactless payment terminal. US Bank Visa Micro Tag displays the Visa and US Bank brands as well as the contactless indicator. The bank is to distribute over 4,000 prepaid Visa Micro Tags which are linked to a prepaid US Bank Visa gift account to employees in November 2008. The Visa Micro Tag can be used for purchases at any location which accepts Visa payWave. The Visa Micro Tag is not available in Europe. The US Bank Visa Micro Tags were manufactured by Giesecke & Devrient which made use of MicroPass chip from Inside Contactless for that purpose.
