RBI brings out report on oversight of payment systems in India

Wednesday 12 December 2007 03:52 CET | News

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has released its first report on oversight of payment systems in India. Although Visa and MasterCard are out of RBI regulatory authority, the RBI has published guidelines for the issuance of cards by the card issuing banks. The compliance with the guidelines is assessed during the inspection of these card issuing banks by the RBI. RBI is currently in dialogue with the Visa and Master Card affiliates in India.

The RBI report on the various payment systems addresses the future role of RBI in Indian payments and also highlights the importance of the role played by the central banks in the retail payment systems. RBI made a detailed assessment of the ‘systematically important payment systems’ based on international standards published by the committee on payment and settlement systems (CPSS) and the Bank for international settlements (BIS).
