Statistics published by The Cheque and Credit Clearing Company (C&CCC), the organisation which manages the cheque clearing system in the UK, indicate almost 5 million cheques processed on an average bank day, as compared with 4.4 million cheques in 2007.

The value of the 5 million cheques ranged from one penny (for 57 cheques) to almost GBP 10 million. The most common value of a cheque reached GBP 50 (in the case of over 120,000 items), while almost half of all cheques (48.4 percent) had a value of more than GBP 100. Almost 28 percent of cheques under GBP 100 were for exact pound amounts. The same organisation reveals a decline in the number of payments by cheque every year, from 2.9 cheque payments per adult per month in 1997 to 1.4 payments in 2007. C&CCC also reports that 25 percent of all bank account holders do not choose to write or receive cheques at all.The peak period in terms of cheque volumes was 1990, a year when the number of issued cheques hit 11 million.
