MasterCard Reports Strong Growth in S. Asia, Middle East Region

MasterCard International has reported exceptional card growth in the South Asia, Middle East and Africa region with a 39.5 per cent increase to 24.6 million cards at the end of the second quarter of 2004, compared to the end of the second quarter of 2003.

Gross Dollar Volume (GDV) for online debit activity in the region for the second quarter of 2004 was $16.0 billion, with purchase volume at $1.3 billion. Purchase transactions for the second quarter of 2004 totaled 16.0 million. MasterCard has announced that its online debit activity, which includes MasterCards online debit program, Maestro, and MasterCards ATM-only brand, Cirrus, continued to show year-on-year growth. As of June 30, 2004, the Maestro brand mark appeared on more than 545 million cards worldwide, a 10.2 per cent increase over the same quarter in 2003. Maestro is the lead debit brand for MasterCard International and offers cardholders secure, convenient access to their deposit accounts from anywhere in the world. As of June 30, 2004, cards bearing the Maestro brand could be used to withdraw cash from more than 900,000 ATMs as well as to make purchases at over 7.0 million Maestro merchant locations worldwide.
