Tuesday 4 May 2004 09:53 CET | News

National Australia Bank has appointed former Visa International Chief Executive Malcolm Williamson, as a new independent director.

U.K.-born Williamson, also a former senior executive at Standard Chartered Bank, fills one of the vacancies left by the resignations of former Chief Executive Frank Cicutto and former Chairman Charles Allen who both stepped down. Williamson, 65, retired from Visa last month after five years at the California-based credit card group. Under his watch, the firm doubled in size and now manages annual sales volumes near US$2.7 trillion. He is currently deputy chairman of U.K.-based insurance and investment house Britannic Group PLC, but has been named to take up the role of chairman later this year. His early career included a number of senior roles at Barclays Bank (BCS). Subject to U.K. regulatory approval, Williamson will also join the boards of NABs European operations which include the Clydesdale Bank and Yorkshire Bank in the U.K.
