The importance of foresight, detailed planning and effective project management emerged as three of the key themes of BACSTEL-IP 2004, the industry event dedicated to BACS new payment submission technology hosted by Eiger Systems. Over 300 delegates from across industry and commerce attended the event held at the Heritage Motor Centre on May 19th. BACSTEL-IP 2004 included presentations from BACS, Eiger Systems, and a case study from Northumbrian Water and was supported by Barclays Bank, HBOS (Halifax Bank of Scotland), HSBC Bank, Lloyds TSB and The Royal Bank of Scotland Group. On the same day Eiger Systems launched their new website, www.migratetobacstel-ip.co.uk, a resource centre dedicated to providing information on how to best exploit BACSTEL-IP and improve payment processing. BACSTEL-IP is the new payment submission platform that replaces the BACSTEL service on 31st December 2005. All organisations that submit Direct Debits and Direct Credits to BACS must migrate to BACSTEL-IP by this deadline. In his presentation, David Sear, Chief Marketing Officer of BACS Limited, echoed other speakers when he stressed the enormous benefits to be gained from BACSTEL-IP, particularly for sophisticated and high volume BACS Service Users, and the critical importance of developing effective planning and implementation strategies if deadlines are to be met. Insufficient resource within the industry to meet the demand for migration services could become a serious issue if all organisations take a last minute approach to the project. The final deadline of 31st December 2005 for the existing BACSTEL service is preceded by an earlier deadline depending on whether the organisation is using the ADDACS X.400 service.
