Citi launches Octopus credit card in Hong Kong

Friday 18 July 2008 15:23 CET | News

Citi has issued a contactless Octopus card in Hong Kong, which functions both as a travel and a credit card. Customers are now able to use this card at nearly 50,000 terminals to travel on public transport and make low value contactless payments at retail outlets.

The card automatically reloads the Octopus feature when it runs low. Citis involvement with Octopus follows partnerships with the Delhi Mass Rapid Transit System (DMRT), the Singapore Mass Rapid Transit System, and the New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority. The Octopus card was launched in 1997. Currently, there are more than 17 million Octopus cards in circulation and over 10 million transactions, worth EUR 6.88 million, are processed daily.
