Smartcard technology developer Chams Nigeria is to install almost 50,000 ATMs and PoS terminals via its subsidiary ChamsSwitch in order to encourage e-commerce activity in the region.

The card payment systems incorporate biometric features, as well as the traditional PIN security systems. ChamsSwitch focuses on electronic commerce and manages transactional and identification switching. ChamsSwitch runs on a payment engine designed to acquire, authenticate, route, switch, and authorise financial transactions across multiple channels. The system incorporates features which support chip and PIN as well as magnetic stripe card transactions. The PoS terminals and ATMs will be put into use starting January 2009.
