Web merchants call upon the financial industry to improve online payment services

Monday 23 May 2011 11:53 CET | News

On 23 May web merchants and their national representatives, together with representatives of the financial industry, gathered in Barcelona to talk about the E-payment Merchant Initiative (EMI). This merchant led initiative is started to urgently improve the quality of online payment services. Now that e-commerce is growing so strongly, web merchants want better e-payment services that are less sensitive to fraud, have more cross border reach and lead to more sales conversion. The e-commerce market will grow faster as a result.

A Position Paper was created by the international web merchant community with the most pressing issues leading to 10 recommendations. These vary from short term operational improvements (e.g. 3D Secure, charge back procedures) to new services development in the field of buyer authentication and payments on tablets and mobile phones. A strong call to action was made towards the banking industry to come up with payment methods leveraging the online banking channel with regards to the new SEPA payments products.

“The EMI is a historic initiative in this field”, says Wijnand Jongen representing the initiative group of collaborating web merchant organizations and web merchants from UK, France, Germany, Denmark, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Finland and The Netherlands . “Never before was the voice of merchants articulated so strongly. Merchants are looking to bring the e-commerce market to the next level and invite the financial industry to join as partners”.

Various stakeholders were represented in Barcelona, including European Payment Council, European Central Bank, Euro Banking Association Clearing, Acquirers, Payment Service providers, merchant organizations and merchants. A 2nd draft position paper, which has been reviewed in the past months by all stakeholders, was discussed in Barcelona. During this day input was gathered for a 3rd final version, which will be published on 14 June, before its presentation at the European Banking Association conference (EBA Day) in Madrid on 15 June. The current version 2nd draft of the Position Paper can be download here: http://www.e-commercesummit.com/preconference/ .
