PayPal revenue up 11% year-on-year in Q1 2009

For the quarter ending 31 March 2009, PayPal registers an 11 percent increase in revenue to USD 645 million, while its parent company eBay posts USD 357.1 million in revenue for the same period, down 22 percent.

The number of the online payment service providers active accounts has also increased by 22 percent year-on-year and by 4 percent as compared to the previous quarter, reaching 73.1 million. At the end of December 2008, PayPal had 70.4 million active accounts (up 8 percent over Q3 2008). In Q1 2009, its purchase volume rose by 18 percent on a foreign exchange-neutral basis to USD 15.9 billion.

PayPals transactional revenue rate came at 3.81 percent of payment volume, while the transaction processing expense rate and transaction loss rate reached 1.16 percent and 0.28 percent, respectively. eBays online payments business will focus on the acquisition of new merchants, the growth of Bill Me Later and will also target penetration into new marketplaces.
