Wednesday 14 September 2011 11:27 CET | News

US-based start-up Openbucks has rolled out the Gift Card Payment Network to enable consumers to pay online using gift cards.

The Gift Card Payment Network allows consumers to use gift cards from retail brands to pay for online games and goods purchased via e-commerce websites. The gift cards online purchasing and payment method is aimed at consumers who do not have a credit card or prefer not to use it when paying online. Consumers can purchase the gift card at one of more than 100,000 locations in the US and Canada. Online merchants can add the Openbucks payment option to their shopping cart through an application programming interface (API).

Openbucks plans to create a “universal payment network” which allows customers to use gift cards to buy goods and services online. The company has already partnered with retailers, including Subway, CVS, Circle K, Sports Authority, Hess and CITGO.
