The pilot program is expected to provide AT&T customers with the ability to make online purchases directly from their wireless handset. When they want to make an online purchase, customers enter their mobile number in the Zong application. Zong first verifies the wireless phone number and account and then clears the payment on the customer’s existing wireless service account. Zong provides a mobile payments service that combines carrier billing with credit, debit and prepaid cards. The company is also the mobile payment provider for Facebook Credits, a new virtual currency platform being deployed across the Facebook network of over 400 million monthly active users.
The carrier has also partnered with US startup Boku to give AT&T subscribers the ability to buy music, movies, digital news and other services from their mobile devices.
