Alibaba teams up with Western Union to offer cash payment service

Thursday 14 July 2011 13:20 CET | News

Chinese e-commerce group Alibaba has teamed up with global payment services provider Western Union to enable users of its AliExpress e-commerce platform to buy goods online by making cash payments at Western Union agent branches.

The new service will allow registered buyers to place orders directly through AliExpress.com and opt to pay cash at Western Union Agent locations in more than 160 countries and territories. Funds will be held in escrow by AliExpress.com and submitted to sellers upon buyers receiving their goods. When the user places the order, a unique number is generated. The buyer has to present the unique order number with the pre-defined Alibaba entity as the beneficiary of payment and fill in a payments form at a participating Western Union agent location. Funds paid via the Western Union Quick Pay service will be automatically displayed to the seller which will signal for the goods to be shipped to the buyer. Buyer funds will be held in escrow by AliExpress.com and released to sellers upon buyer’s confirmation of receipt of goods.

The service is aimed at under-served markets such as Latin America, Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa where entrepreneurs have limited payment options and mostly rely on cash transactions.

The AliExpress e-commerce platform offers smaller-quantity orders, instant online transactions and an escrow service to protect buyers and sellers. In June 2011 , eBays online payment unit, PayPal has unveiled it will end its partnership with Alibaba beginning with 3 August 2011.
