Directebanking temporarily halts customer acquisition in the Netherlands

Thursday 23 April 2009 11:15 CET | News

German payment services provider Payment Network has announced plans to stop recruiting Dutch customers for its internet banking-based payment method Directebanking for an undetermined period of time, twinklemagazine.nl reports.

Directebanking entered the Dutch online payments market at the end of January 2009, being made available to Fortis, ABN, Rabobank, SNS and ING Bank online banking account holders. In the Netherlands, Directebanking is set to compete directly with iDEAL, the online banking-based payment method developed by several large Dutch banks. The payment method functions in almost the same way as iDEAL, but users need to submit their bank detail outside of their bank’s internet portal.

Payment Network has been in talks with the Dutch Association of Banks (NVB) after the NBV formally requested Payment Network to halt its activities. The bilateral talks focus primarily on security-related issues and Directebanking’s effect on the security of the internet as a sales channel, Martijn Bäumer, key account manager of Payment Network in the Netherlands, told twinklemagazine.nl.

Directebanking is already present in Germany, Austria and Switzerland under the name Sofort Uberweisung. Throughout 2009, Payment Network has announced plans to roll out Directebanking in Belgium, the UK and France. Dutch online payment services providers MultiSafepay and Icepay already offer Directebanking to their customers.
