According to the research conducted by French-based payment services provider Ingenico, although 46 percent of UK polled consumers would consider using their mobile phone as a method of payment, many of them claim they feel unprepared to stop using traditional forms of payment. Thus, the survey reveals that 13 percent of British consumers own a contactless-enabled debit/credit card and only 5 percent have ever made a payment using a contactless debit/credit card.
The research reveals that two of the primary reasons why the adoption of contactless payment technology remains slow is that consumers feel that they are not well-informed about both using the technology and the security within the technology.
As a result, 61 percent of UK interviewees claim they need more reassurance that contactless card and mobile payment technology is secure before they attempt to make any such payments. In addition, 47 percent of polled British consumers claim that they don’t know enough about contactless or mobile payment technology to make them want to use it.
The research also highlights an ongoing concern over security, with 47 percent of UK consumers in the survey claiming they were put off using contactless cards because they thought it would put them at risk of fraud or identity theft.
