The Swiss federal railways SBB has started to offer mobile tickets through its online ticket shop SBB Ticket Shop.

In order to purchase mobile tickets, customers must first register online at www.sbb.ch/ticketshop. The tickets are charged to the users’ credit cards. The traveler books the ticket online and gets a MMS with a 2D barcode thats read by a scanner used by the train conductors.

SBB offers mobile tickets for 780 routes linking 40 towns and cities in Switzerland. Currently, the service is only available for Swisscom, Sunrise and Orange, but SBB will also start offering mobile tickets to users of the Migros, Tele2 and Yallo networks as soon as they provide technical support for MMS.

SBB also allows users to purchase ordinary tickets for travel within Switzerland, City Tickets, Half-Fare Day Cards as well as Bicycle Day Cards via their website. These online tickets can be downloaded from the internet as PDF files and printed out on regular A4 sized paper.
