Spain: La Caixa rolls out contactless ATMs

Wednesday 6 April 2011 11:57 CET | News

Spain-based financial services provider La Caixa has reportedly rolled out contactless ATMs across three cities in Spain, googlenews.com reports.

According to the source, La Caixa has installed ATMs featuring contactless technology across three Spanish cities, namely Barcelona, Sitges and Mallorca. As part of the project, La Caixa has partnered with Japanese IT company Fujitsu to develop the technology for the NFC-based ATMs.

How it works

Customers have to wave their debit cards next to a reader and then enter their PIN in order to withdraw cash or carry out other transactions, the source reports. The ATMs currently allow only cash withdrawals; the bank intends to make other operations available as well for the contactless ATMs.

As part of future developments, the bank is planning to install more contactless ATMs across the Catalonia region and the Balearic Islands by the end of 2011. La Caixa counts over 8,000 ATMs across Spain, the source reports.

In November 2010 , Global Payments, an international provider of electronic transaction processing services, and La Caixa have signed an agreement to form a joint venture, designed to provide merchant acquiring and payment processing services to merchants in Spain.
