China-based PCCW-HKT has partnered with Octopus Cards Limited (OCL), an operator of the Octopus rechargeable contactless smart card used in an electronic payment system, to provide a mobile phone SIM card with Octopus payment function.

PCCW-HKT is set to adopt the solution of Single Wire Protocol (SWP)-SIM cards to serve as the secure element for payment applications running on a mobile phone.

PCCW-HKTs mobile customers are enabled to insert the PCCW-HKT Octopus Mobile SIM (OMS) into their NFC phones and tap their phone over an Octopus reader to pay. Additionally, customers can apply for Automatic Add Value service for Octopus value.

With the OctoCheck application developed by OCL, the OMS supports the option to check the last 40 Octopus transaction records together with the remaining value.

For the initial launch, there are set to be available 5,000 OMS for subscription at PCCW-HKT shops. The OMS can be used on SONYs NFC-enabled smartphones.

HKT is a Hong Kong telecommunications service provider including local telephony, local data and broadband, international telecommunications, mobile, and other telecommunications businesses such as customer premises equipment sale, outsourcing, consulting, and contact centers.
