Denmark-based payment service provider Nets has released a study in its ‘E-Com Report’ published on Friday for Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

For the E-Com Report, Nets surveyed 8000 people in the DACH region between September 2020 and June 2021, including 2,600 from Switzerland. This study shows that in-store shopping is still the top priority for Swiss consumers, as only 28% prefer the online shop to the physical store. 46% of German consumers prefer to shop in the online shop, while only 43% prefer the store. In Austria, the proportion of online shoppers is also significantly higher at 40%. According to the study, there is also a clear difference in purchasing behaviour compared to neighbouring countries.

Two thirds of the Swiss consumers surveyed prefer to shop online retail stores rather than online marketplaces such as Amazon, Zalando or Alibaba, which are preferred by only 19%. German and Austrian consumers, on the other hand, prefer the large marketplaces for the most part. When it comes to online shops, 60% of those surveyed stated that they had made purchases from a domestic provider in the past four weeks. German providers follow with a share of 25% and Chinese providers with 12%. According to the study, 21% of respondents would have made a conscious decision in favour of a Swiss provider.

When it comes to the most popular goods to purchase on the Internet, clothing clearly comes first. 46% of those surveyed have bought clothes online in the past four weeks. Shoes (25%) as well as beauty products and media such as books (22% each) follow on the popularity ranking. When it comes to online services, the study concluded that streaming offers for music, films and audio books are at the top with a share of 34%, followed by insurance with 17% and online games and digital media with 13% each. When it comes to payment, the credit card has a clear lead with a share of 30% of online payments made by Swiss customers. This is followed by invoice payments with a share of 23%. Electronic wallets such as PayPal (12%), instalment payments (10%) and debit cards (8%) played a much smaller role.
