A new report shows that by 2011 an estimated 612 million mobile phone users could generate mobile financial transactions of over USD 587 billion. The report reveals that mobile phones are likely to revolutionise the financial sector in a similar manner that the ATM did for the banking and cash businesses.

The report splits Mobile Financial Services (MFS) into mobile banking and mobile payments categories with mobile payments expected to generate almost USD 22 billion of transaction by 2011 and be adopted by 204 million mobile phone users. The report was released by research firm Jupiter Research. Jupiter Research illustrates the current and near-future status of MFS with interviews, case studies and analysis from representatives of organisations in the mobile financial industry.“A combination of increased user demand and a desire from all sections of the MFS ecosystem to deliver intelligent applications and services has created an atmosphere that is both creative and pragmatic,” said report author Alan Goode.
