MasterCard has launched mobile services in Taiwan, in cooperation with mobile network operator Chunghwa Telecom and financial institution Cathay United Bank.

The service allows Chunghwa Telecom mobile subscribers to download virtual credit cards, issued by four banks, to a special SIM card on smartphones equipped with near-field communication (NFC) technology.

Consumers are set to be able to use the NFC-enabled virtual credit cards to pay bills and make purchases at select stores in Taiwan and stores in other 51 countries.

In recent news, payment service provider Kalixa has been selected by MasterCard to issue a version of its Kalixa Pay prepaid card to every newly accredited acquirer for testing.
