Iraq: Asiacell, Amwal join forces for mobile financial services rollout

Asiacell, an Iraqi mobile telecommunications company, has entered an agreement with Amwal, a consortium of Iraqi banks.

According to the deal, Asiacell, part of The Qtel Group of companies, will provide customers living in Iraq with commercial banking and transaction services that can be accessed via the mobile devices. The company`s prepaid customers will be able to use their handsets to directly purchase airtime, goods and services from registered merchants, check their bank account balances and make mobile-to-mobile and bank account-to-bank account money transfers.

All transactions will be linked directly with subscribers bank accounts at Amwal member banks.
