Garanti Bank, Avea partner to roll out NFC-enabled SIM cards

Turkish financial services provider Garanti Bank has entered a partnership with Avea, a Turkish GSM operator. Under the agreement, the two companies are set to launch a mobile payments application designed to enable customers to make contactless payments via their mobile handsets.

The application has been developed with the support of MasterCard and Gemalto and is set to make the current mobile devices of the Turkish subscribers compatible with the NFC technology via new SIM cards. In consequence, Avea users will be able to initiate payments using their mobile phones which will have the functionality of a contactless payment terminal.

The new NFC-enabled SIM cards will be made available in July 2010.
