Ericsson has been chosen as supplier of a full commercial EDGE system for Norwegian mobile operator Telenor Mobil.

The upgrade of their existing GSM/GPRS Ericsson network in Norway will enable launch of new consumer and enterprise services. The agreement also includes deliveries to the worlds most northern mobile network at Svalbard. Under the agreement, Ericsson will provide a complete EDGE network infrastructure, delivering fast, packet-based mobile Internet access. EDGE, an enhancement of GPRS, can handle three times the data volume of GPRS in existing spectrum bands. Deliveries have started and the network upgrade will serve approximately 2 million subscribers in Norway.
