Equity Bank, Safaricom launch m-banking service

Monday 18 January 2010 10:39 CET | News

Kenya-based financial services provider Equity Bank has joined forces with mobile telephone operator Safaricom for the launch of a new mobile money transfer service which enables M-PESA customers to access money from the banks ATMs.

Customers will gain access to money without the need for a bank account or an ATM card, with only the ATM machine and their mobile phones acting as the interface. In order to be able to withdraw amounts which can range between KShs 200 and Kshs 35,000 from any Equity Bank ATM, users of the service need to be registered as M-PESA customers.

The M-PESA to ATM service that will be available to both bank customers and non-customers will adopt the normal M-PESA ATM withdrawal charges. After initiating a withdrawal from their M-PESA menu on their mobile phones, customers will receive an authorisation code, input this code into the ATM followed by their Safaricom phone number and the amount they wish to withdraw. The Equity ATM will then dispense the required cash and a receipt.
