China Adds 5.45 Million Mobile Phone Users In April

China added 5.45 million mobile phone subscribers in April, bringing the total number of mobile users to 295.75 million by the end of that month, Ministry of Information Industry data showed Monday.

The mobile phone users are all customers of China Mobile Communications Corp. (MCC.YY) and China United Telecommunications Corp., the nations state-owned mobile duopoly. China is the worlds biggest mobile phone market by users. The number of new fixed-line subscribers continued to lag that for mobile phones. Over the same period, China added 4.37 million fixed-line users for a total of 285.448 million subscribers, the MII said on its Web site. Fixed-line services in China are mostly provided by state-owned companies China Telecommunications and China Netcom. In the January to April period, revenue from postal and telecommunication services rose 13.1% year on year to 187.14 billion yuan ($1=CNY8.28). Of the total, telecom revenue rose 13.8% on year to CNY168.36 billion, while postal revenue was up 6.8% on year to CNY18.78 billion.
