According to the sources, the NFC-enabled SIMpass SIM card is expected to provide Beijing residents with m-payment services for the Beijing Automated Fare Collection System (Beijing-AFCS).
Onto access the new service, China Unicom subscribers need to replace their phone’s SIM card with the new SIMpass card, which is set to offer contactless mobile payment services. The service is expected to be available only to 2G users during the debut promotional period, according to the sources.
The same sources report that the Mobile Smart Card service includes a mobile wallet that stores no personal information and functions as a public transportation contactless payment card. In addition, the service is also set to offer an account registered in the users name, where funds can be used to recharge the mobile wallet, according to the source.
The Beijing-AFCS transportation system delivers smart card services to 40 million users and it is used on over 50,000 buses, 60,000 taxis and in 2,000 businesses, such as car parks, supermarkets or restaurants.
