According to a survey from game development studio Arkadium, cited by market research firm eMarketer.com, in Q2 2013, 43 percent of US gamers have made an in-game purchase in a mobile game, as compared to 38 percent of gamers who have made in-game purchases while playing a Facebook game.

The stickiness of social and mobile gaming is relevant for the US market, the same source points out. This tendency is backed up by the fact that 56 percent of adult US gamers played more than three mobile games per week, as compared to 48 percent who played more than three Facebook games per week.

In addition, eMarketer estimates there will be 80.3 million social network users playing games at least once per month in 2013 and 125.9 million mobile phone gamers doing the same.

As monetisation is still an issue and although many of the games are free and cheap, an April 2013 study from payments consultancy WorldPay shows that more than one-quarter of US web users reported having purchased through an app store a game that could be played via any device, 16 percent had purchased an online game via the web and 15 percent had purchased a game to play with friends via social media.

According to WorldPay, gaming apps average a USD 6.84 per transaction.
