Wednesday 14 July 2010 11:08 CET | News

Internet auction site eBay is being sued for USD 3.8 billion by US company XPRT Ventures which claims that the online retailer infringed several patents to develop its PayPal online payments system.

According to the complaint, eBay used confidential and proprietary information from XPRT in its own application for a patent and to roll out several features for use in its payment systems, such as PayPal Pay Later, PayPal Buyer Credit, PayPals Balance Manager Service and the Checkout payment system. PayPal, as well as other eBay subsidiaries BillMeLater, Shopping.com, and StubHub, were also named as defendants in the lawsuit.

eBays payments business generated USD 2.8 billion of net revenue in 2009, or 32 percent of the companys USD 8.73 billion total.
