Walmart has announced that it will close down its ecommerce operation in Brazil and focus more on brick and mortar locations.

In addition, the ecommerce company said that it is working on a new omnichannel strategy which will be announced later in 2019, Reuters reports.

Walmart launched an ecommerce division in Brazil in 2011, selling directly to consumers. In 2017, the retailer discontinued direct sales, focusing only on running as a marketplace for third-party sellers, which it had launched in 2015. In 2018, buyout company Advent International acquired an 80% stake in the Brazilian operation.

In a separate statement, Walmart Brasil announced plans to convert 10 underperforming hypermarkets into wholesale stores Maxxi Atacado by the end of 2020. The first one was opened on May 2019 in the city of Diadema. Another 10 hypermarkets will be converted into Sam’s Club stores, according to Reuters.
