Indian ecommerce to reach USD 230 bln by 2028

The Indian ecommerce market size is expected to reach USD 230 billion by 2028, according to an E-commerce Council of India (TECI) and ChannelPlay report.

According to the report, the Indian ecommerce market is outpacing the offline retail growth, an increased fueled by low data tariffs, affordable smartphones, and growing Internet usage. Ecommerce in India has grown beyond the first wave of metro consumers in Tier-I cities and is adding millions of buyers from Tier-II, III cities and beyond.

Other key findings:

  • 89% of respondents believe that neutrality of the marketplace is important as and should not have any of its own or related party sellers on the platform;

  • 94% of respondents felt sellers controlled by the marketplace (through various arrangements) hurt the business of independent sellers on the platform;

  • the majority of the respondents feel that private labels on the marketplaces can create a conflict of interest and selling their private labels on the platforms should be prohibited.
