The e-commerce market in Greece is expected to surpass EUR 5 billion over the next years, a recent study has unveiled.

According to a survey released by the Athens Economic University, in 2011 the Greek e-commerce segment has amounted to EUR 1.7 billion. The same source has mentioned that 15 percent of a total of 2,000 enterprises in the industry have failed to present the basic elements of a formal enterprise, such as address, telephone, e-mail or even a tax register number.

Research has also indicated that the e-commerce market is growing by at least 30 percent y-o-y, with almost 1,500,000 Greeks registered as mature online consumers. Data has pointed out that the cost of creating an online shop has decreased from EUR 30,000 in 2010 to EUR 5,000. Electronic products are the main products sold through the market, although travel packages are gradually gaining market share.
