The scam works by displaying a message warning to the users mentioning that they have been illegally downloading content or viewing illegal content online. The user is then told to pay a EUR 150 fine to avoid prosecution and that their computer will be locked until the fine is paid.
In a growing number of cases, computer users have panicked and paid the fine which, according to the Garda, has enabled the scammers to steal a lot of money. The Garda advice to Irish computer users is to be wary and remember that official police forces will never contact people in this way.
