Visa Canada points out to upcoming milestione related to Chip card migration

Tuesday 14 September 2010 10:23 CET | News

In the wake of Canadas migration to EMV chip card technology, Visa Canada reminds merchants about an important Chip migration milestone. Starting October 1, 2010, the liability for card-present fraudulent transactions involving a Chip card, such as counterfeit or card-not-received fraud, will shift to merchants who have not implemented Chip-compliant technology.

Nevertheless, Visa is determined to help Canadian merchants prevent any criminal attacks related to the Chip technology processing via its Visa payWave contactless technology. Visa payWave enables customers to simply wave their Chip card in front of a contactless reader at checkout, without the need to sign or use their PIN.

Canada’s migration to Chip card technology is considered an important step in harnessing the protection of business and customers from fraud related liability.

In addition, Visa chip cards will continue to have a magnetic stripe to ensure that cards can be used globally and there will continue to be fraud prevention measures on all cards and on the Visa network. Merchants will experience no change when accepting magnetic stripe cards.
