MasterCard PayPass is an EMV contactless payment option which enables cardholders to pay by tapping a payment card or other payment device, including a phone or key fob, on a POS terminal reader instead of swiping or inserting a card. Tim Hortons started accepting MasterCard PayPass in some of its 3,000 stores in Canada in 2007. As of Q1 2009, there are almost 55 million PayPass cards and devices at over 146,000 merchant locations worldwide. So far, MasterCard PayPass trials and rollouts have been conducted in 25 markets.
