The same source indicates that when the consumers in question contacted their issuing banks, they were assured that the charges and falsely issued fees would be voided. According to CNN, Visa released a statement in which it attributed the charges to a “temporary programming error at Visa Debit Processing Services ... [which] caused some transactions to be inaccurately posted to a small number of Visa prepaid accounts”. Visa also indicated that the false charges affected “fewer than 13,000 prepaid transactions”.
