OP-Pohjola Group to introduce cards with contactless technology

Tuesday 20 March 2012 11:30 CET | News

Finland-based financial services provider OP-Pohjola Group has revealed plans to introduce payment cards using contactless technology. The contactless payments are aimed at enabling consumers to pay for small purchases without entering their PIN.

As a result, consumers will be able to make payments by holding the card closely to the payment terminal. In Finland, the maximum payment amount will be of EUR 25. Any payments exceeding this amount will be made by using the same card in the traditional manner, by inserting the card in the payment terminal and approving the payment by entering the PIN.

OP-Pohjola Groups payment cards using contactless technology are currently being tested both in Finland and abroad. The company has revealed plans to have OP-Visa debit cards with the contactless payment feature available to their customers in autumn 2012. Any OP-Visa debit cards ordered and renewed after that time will automatically feature the contactless payment capability.

Cards using contactless technology will function in Finland and abroad in stores where payment terminals are compatible with contactless payments.
