Data shows that the value of transactions on electronic cards at retailers from New Zealand declined 0.3 percent in April. Electronic transactions, excluding motor vehicle-related industries, declined 0.9 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis from March.

The overall seasonally adjusted electronic card spending, including transactions in industries other than retail, grew by 1.4 percent in April, after declining by 1 percent in the previous month. The retail sales data indicates that sales dropped 1.2 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis in March, as compared with a 0.6 percent decline in February.Data was provided by Statistics New Zealand. The organization believes that the card spending data should not be an indicator of monthly retail sales, as it does not include cash and cheque transactions, but analysts consider that electronic transactions reflect consumer spending.
