The card combines MasterCard’s M/Chip 2.1 EMV technology for contact applications with the PayPass M/Chip Flex technology based on the global ISO/IEC14443 Type A standard for contactless applications, online news outlet japantoday.com reports. The initiative aims to provide Japanese companies which currently issue EMV cards with a means to allow customers to carry out MasterCard PayPass payments.
In Q1 2009, there were around 55 million MasterCard PayPass-enabled cards and devices in use, with 146,000 merchant locations worldwide offering Tap & Go cashless shopping. PayPass trials and roll-outs have been initiated in 29 countries, such as Australia, Canada, China, Mexico, Romania, Spain, Switzerland, the UK and the US.
