MasterCard rolls out contactless PayPass technology in Rio de Janeiro

MasterCard Worldwide has teamed up with Credicard, the Brazilian credit card unit of financial services provider Citibank, and with Brazilian acquiring company Redecard to roll out MasterCarda PayPass contactless payment technology for the public transport system and quick service merchants based in Rio de Janeiro.

MasterCard PayPass is the first contactless payment product to be introduced for public transportation in Latin America. The rollout will allow Credicard MasterCard cardholders in Rio de Janeiro to carry out purchases using MasterCard’s PayPass key fobs at the Pão de Açúcar (Sugar Loaf Mountain) lift, Supervia train stations, UCI cinemas, McDonald’s fast food restaurants and Estapar/Riopark parking lots located in Rio.

In order for the MasterCad PayPass technology to be used Rio de Janeiro, Redecard has equipped the participating merchants with contactless technology-enabled terminals. MasterCard has also announced that its PayPass cards and devices issued in Brazil will be accepted for use at the Rio de Janeiro Metro system in the near future.
